Hallelujah… Canada’s democracy still works!
Auditor General Michael Ferguson, in a report released today, slammed the Conservative government’s plans to purchase F-35 fighter jets, saying the entire process lacked sufficient oversight and did not exercise due diligence.
National defense officials stand accused of low-balling the costs of the controversial aircraft, and of keeping Canadians in the dark about the true risks of participating in a project beset by delays and cost overruns.
Wow! What is this strange feeling that has overtaken me? It’s some kind of fuzzy, warm reassurance that politics in Canada has not been usurped by the military industrial complex.
The purchase of replacement jets will still continue, only now with more transparency and more accountability. And instead of giving sole responsibility to the Defense department, the big ticket purchase will be shared with Public Works and other branches of office.
Opposition members are going to have a field day with this during question period. My hope is that they set their sights on none other than the Defense Minister himself, Peter MacKay. Who better to take the axe than the guy who vehemently pushed for the buggy and overpriced jets?
Even if MacKay does weasel his way out of this, Canadians can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that, even with a majority government, Conservatives can still brought to bear for their unscrupulous dealings.
American Freedom Under Attack: Nationwide Strike Called

A state of emergency has been declared for all freedom loving Americans across the nation. The republic is under attack!
Contrary to popular belief, the most pressing threat lies not with foreign extremists, but rather, from an equally radical homegrown form of tyranny. Like a disease, this danger has been quietly spreading within the very heart of the democratic system which entire armies have fought valiantly to protect.
What is it that stands to destroy the personal liberties and civil rights of every single US citizen? Fascist new legislation – SOPA and NDAA – which gives the US military the right to detain and torture American civilians on American soil without any trial, as well as permitting the US government to shutdown entire segments of the Internet at will.
Scary stuff. These are the kinds of laws power-hungry dictators dream about.
Why are US legislators working to pass such ludicrous bills? Here’s one reason: half of all Americans – that’s one in every two US citizens – are officially living in poverty. Stats like that will not go unanswered for long.
George Carlin says ‘they call it the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it’. Well, it seems the people are starting to wake up. And what they are seeing is making them mad enough to stir up a revolution.
Certain powers that be already know this, which is precisely why they are preparing the US government for a war against its own people.
This means the opportunity for delay has now ended. Standing on the precipice of a slippery slope, Americans must act quickly or risk losing the opportunity to ever speak out again.
An Occupy Manifesto
Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011The Occupy movement is a leaderless collective demonstrating against overlapping grievances, with the majority of the people demanding some form of reform in government.
While there is no one goal or single concrete agenda for all to follow, many beautiful visions of a potential future are emerging, as evident by the following statement of principles arising from the Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly:
We Envision:
- A truly free, democratic, and just society;
- where we, the people, come together and solve our problems by consensus;
- where people are encouraged to take personal and collective responsibility and participate in decision making;
- where we learn to live in harmony and embrace principles of toleration and respect for diversity and the differing views of others;
- where we secure the civil and human rights of all from violation by tyrannical forces and unjust governments;
- where political and economic institutions work to benefit all, not just the privileged few;
- where we provide full and free education to everyone, not merely to get jobs but to grow and flourish as human beings;
- where we value human needs over monetary gain, to ensure decent standards of living without which effective democracy is impossible;
- where we work together to protect the global environment to ensure that future generations will have safe and clean air, water and food supplies, and will be able to enjoy the beauty and bounty of nature that past generations have enjoyed.
Wow. What an incredibly just global civilization we could have if every nation internalized these values into the heart of their constitutions.
Well, there’s no time like the present for seizing the day. Take action now! The better world we’re dreaming of won’t arrive without our help.
End of Israel’s Atrocities?
Monday, September 5th, 2011Later this month, it is expected that the United Nations will vote in Palestine as a new member nation, based on the 1967 borders. When this happens, Israel’s current occupation of Palestinian land will be officially illegal in the eyes of the international community.
In preparation, Israel’s military – the IDF – has been handing out tear gas and stun grenades to civilians, anticipating the coming demonstrations from the newly freed Palestinians. But what they should really be preparing for are the economic sanctions coming from the rest of the world in response to Israel’s decades long record of human rights violations.
For example, a recently leaked cable exposes the IDF’s willingness to use ‘harsh measures’ upon peaceful Palestinian protestors. Another story reveals how the State of Israel consistently tortures confessions from Palestinian children, as if that’s going to earn them any love from the world.
Sure, Israel still has the support of the US and its taxpayers, who, over the past 10 years, have subsidized every 5-person Israeli family the staggering sum of $200,000. And, of course, the US has been urging the UN to stall the upcoming vote, not that the UN intends on listening.
But the US is waning as the world’s superpower, and without their giant ally overseas to protect them, Israel is fast finding itself alone, surrounded by enemies while facing a huge upswell of dissension from within.
It won’t be long until the State of Israel has no choice but to capitulate to mounting pressure from the globe, forever ceasing their crimes against humanity. What a glorious day this will be for the world’s peace movement.
