The Spark Project
Sunday, November 11th, 2012In early 2013 a tool by The Spark Project will help concentrate people power into a force so powerful that it can counterbalance giant institutions like corporations and bad governments, even rivalling the biggest scourge of the earth – the military industrial complex.
The Spark Project was started 1 year ago by a group of Redditors who were inspired by the site’s amazing ability to filter through nonsense while bringing the best and brightest ideas to the top. They thought, ‘why not take this effective formula of crowdsourcing and use it to foster a true democracy?’. And so they did.
While still looking for funds and volunteers, the team have made tremendous headway and will likely release their tools early in 2013. Read more about the project at thespark.org.
It is tools like these which, once refined and widely adapted, can truly reshape the world. By channelling the voices of millions (and billions) of people into practical political clout, we’ll finally be able to enact real changes to the global establishment. We can finally make our world what we want it to be.
No more gross inequality where billionaires can hoard more for themselves while billions of people are left to starve. No more rampant exploitation of weaker nations by the more powerful in what is no less that modern-day slavery. No more politically or corporately organized armed conflict, meaning world peace will finally be upon us.
All this, and more, can and will be ours once we truly start working together as one people. Awesome!
Post-Capitalism Currency
Sunday, September 4th, 2011(Surprising how little has changed in the past century.)
Over the coming few years, humankind will keep growing more and more interconnected. Eventually, we will harness our planetary solidarity, rising against today’s global system of division and exploitation, disrupting the established economic system to enact a major redistribution of wealth and power.
Once this great social movement transpires, we’ll still need a way to buy and sell things. For an idea of what a more just economy may look like, there’s a few places we can look to.
Open Money
The open money project aims to “create the global infrastructure, tools, governance mechanisms and platforms that will give communities the capacity to create their own currencies with just a few clicks and thereby liberate their wealth potential.” It’s like an open-source platform for commerce, free from the tyranny of fluctuating global markets.
The Venus Project
The Venus Project is an organization that advocates improving society by moving towards a global sustainable social design that they call a “resource-based economy”. Such a system incorporates sustainable cities and values, energy efficiency, collective farms, natural resource management and advanced automation.
A resource based economy relies on the principle of ‘post scarcity’, meaning our technology has progressed to the point of readily meeting the basic needs of every human on earth – something which is fast becoming possible.
Bitcoin
Bitcoins are digital currency which runs on an open-source, peer-to-peer network, allowing users to exchange wealth without the need for a centralized payment processor. While these coins only exist in the virtual realm, they already hold real world value.
So what will we end up using? Maybe a combination of all three, or something entirely different. Who knows.
But one thing is reasonably certain – a world full of united and empowered individuals will never tolerate an economic system that caters solely to the fortunate few sitting atop.
Google’s Project 10 to the 100 voting open
Sunday, October 4th, 2009Google’s Project 10 to the 100 has open their voting, after many months of deliberation. Over 150,000 entries from 170 countries had to be sorted, and the results are in. The result: a list of 16 “big ideas” each inspired by numerous individual submissions. Many progressive ideas have come out of this, like increasing government transparency, more efficient land-mine removal, and encouraging positive media depictions of engineers and scientists. Voting is open until October 8th.
While it is nice for the results to finally be presented, they are somewhat disappointing. Originally, they had planned to select 100 finalists, then allow the public to vote on their favorites. It would have been amazing to see the finalists, to see the innovative and original ideas that others put forward. Now, with just 16 broad catagories, the results don’t have same impact.
Oh well. It’s still a great endeavor and good on Google for taking up the initiative.
Google’s Project 10 to the 100th
Sunday, September 6th, 2009Google’s Project 10 to the 100th is a philanthropic project put forth by the Internet powerhouse Google. This project is a “call for ideas to change the world by helping as many people as possible”. Watch the video below for more info or click here to read about it.
In October of last year, they opened up for submissions for ideas, and they received over 150,000 entries! The deadline for submissions has now passed.
Now, they are faced with the task of sorting through all of these submissions to pick the top 100. From these top 100, they will open up voting to the public, letting us pick the top 25. From these top 25 ideas, they will then pick the top 5. The top 5 will be splitting the prize of $10,000,000, which will be used to jumpstart the projects.
While it has taken them way longer than they initially hoped to pick their finalists, this project is still a great endeavour. What kind of projects have they received… what kind of great ideas and world changing events will arise because of this project… only time will tell.
Here at u4Ya.ca, the idea we put forth is the Global Voting System, which is a protocol for a world wide voting network, that runs off of existing infrastructure to promote global democracy. It would be awesome if we were picked as one of the finalists, to really help jumpstart this ambitious project and truly get the ball rolling.
