5 More Reasons Not to Attack Iran

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

This week Adam Lowther shared a piece entitled ‘Five Reasons Not to Attack Iran‘, focusing on how unilateral invasion would be strategically difficult given the US’s exhausted military and Iran’s legitimate military and intelligence capabilities.

Lowther’s list leaves much to be desired, as the author seems convinced that engaging Iran would be more desirable were it easier to accomplish. That said, I’d like to offer up five more reasons not to go to war with Iran:

One – It Costs Too Much. The wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere have cost American taxpayers close to 1.3 trillion dollars. For a nation struggling with poverty and unemployment, this fortune could have helped out a lot of people back home.

On top of this, hundreds of thousands of lives were snuffed out, and millions more had to flee their homes. The costs, in terms of human suffering, are incalculable. All the more reason to avoid war with Iran for as long as other options exist.

Two – War Breeds Extremism. The chaos and disruption caused by prolonged conflict benefits no one more than violent, radical ideologues. Destabilizing Iran will only fuel more anti-Western sentiment, and this serves no one’s interests (except maybe for the Defense Industry itself).

Three – Iranians are Just Like Us. Underneath superficial differences, like culture, language and religion, the majority of Iranians are regular people. They share similar hopes, dreams and fears, and, just like us, most of them simply want to raise their families in a secure environment. Rather than bombing and killing Iranians, we can help by empowering their communities so that the Iranian people can eliminate extremism from within.

Four – It Doesn’t Work. There’s no proof that America is any safer now than 10 years ago. The populations of Iraq, Afghanistan (and the other US-bomb riddled nations) certainly are no better off. Unless you are a shareholder in a corporation that either profits from a lengthy armed conflict or gets to divvy up the conquered assets, then war has not and will not help you out at all.

Five – We Should be Done with War. We aren’t cavemen chucking spears anymore. It’s the 21st century. Engaging in armed conflict with Iran, like with all wars, would inevitably cause humankind to hurt itself. We are supposed to be an advanced species, so let’s start acting like one.

Don’t wait until our Armed Forces get stuck in another decades long quagmire with no practical exit strategy. Let your voice be heard right now. Say no to war with Iran!

They Want to Take Over the Internet!

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Stop SOPA! Prevent PIPA! The Internet community has spoken – we do not want the government to destroy our beautiful, free Internet.

Yet, just as vigilant Netizens have been rallying the troops, the mainstream media has – GASP! – once again failed to offer any significant coverage of these seriously flawed bills. The folks at Media Matters confirmed this, showing how the big TV news players have almost entirely ignored the issue.

No matter. It’s the Internet we are trying to save, and it will take Internet people to save it.

Take, as an example, Rep. Paul Ryan’s decision to suddenly drop support for SOPA after being inundated with pressure from constituents. The majority of this criticism came from social powerhouse Reddit, whose members coordinated the attack on the former SOPA supporter.

Rob Zerban, Paul Ryan’s 2012 Democratic challenger, extols Ryan’s flip-flop as a prime example of social networking power, saying “This is an extraordinary victory. Reddit was able to force the House Budget chair to reverse course — shock waves will be felt throughout the establishment in Washington today — other lawmakers will take notice.”

Ryan’s about face parallels last month’s change-of-position by GoDaddy, whose support of SOPA prompted a mass-migration as clients shifted their business elsewhere. GoDaddy did eventually drop SOPA backing, but not before doing irreparable damage to their brand.

Even the Internet’s biggest players – Google, Facebook, Twitter and others – are throwing their hat into the ring. The online giants have stated that they will take drastic measures, blocking access to their highly popular sites as a means of protesting the proposed censorship legislation.

With so much at stake, we must fight tooth and nail just to keep from sliding down the slippery slope being laid out under our feet. The future of a free human species could very well depend on what transpires in the next few weeks, so let us carpe this diem while we still can.

Iraq: Millions Left Uprooted

Monday, January 9th, 2012

While last week’s final Iraq War death count highlights those most directly impacted by the US-led invasion, these figures leave untold yet another tale of woe: that of the 3.7 million newly created refugees.

Detailing the plight of displaced Iraq civilians, Andrew Lam writes:

Each time Uncle Sam ventures abroad he leaves an unfinished story, and nowhere is it most unfinished than the story of Iraq, where the tragedy caused by the United States occupation and inevitable abandonment is on an epic proportion.

Whether tyranny has been cast aside is questionable, but certainly cast aside are the people of Iraq. They have been displaced both internally and internationally and are now imperiled by the sin of our omission.

Lam goes on to show how Iraq is not the exception, but more like the rule:

A Theme of Betrayal: Uncle Sam left unwanted children in Vietnam known as con lai – mixed-race children — and it took years for them to come to the US, years in which many lived as abused and abandoned as children of the enemy. Uncle Sam also left tens of thousands of South Vietnamese allies to languish in re-education camps.

The costs of war far outweigh any gains, and the scars left behind can last for generations. Never has war been more unnecessary than it is right now. It is time we move ahead into the world of peace we know exists.

Bill Clinton Supports Occupy Movement

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

Add one more prominent figure throwing their support behind the Occupy Wall Street movement. This time, it’s former US President Bill Clinton, who offered his praise to the people’s uprising while answering questions at a book signing.

“I think what they’re doing is great,” Clinton said. “Occupy Wall Street has done more in the short time they’ve been out there than I’ve been able to do in more than the last eleven years trying to draw attention to some of the same problems we have to address.”

Yes! Occupy has most definitely changed the discussion. But more than that, the movement represents a huge step in the process by which humankind will reclaim control over the planet. Finally, the people are starting to unite and fight back!

For thousands of years, a small but vocal segment of the population has chimed about the persistent, institutionalized injustices. But now, as these same messages get refined and encapsulated into an easily consumed form ready for the general public, the stage is set for what keeps our global establishment’s elites up at night: the thought that dissenting ideas will go viral.

Yet this is exactly what is already happening. Now, there will be no stopping humankind from tearing down the corrupt house of cards to build up a far more just global civilization.

War is the Business of Murder

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

Brave, honorable, country-serving young men and women should avoid military service at all cost unless they wish their esteemed values to be exploited by for-profit entities. Because that’s all today’s major wars are – business.

Don’t believe the lies. Freedom cannot be proliferated at gunpoint. Stirring up a bee’s nest will not make your home safer. War is not inevitable, it’s just that we haven’t done away with it yet.

Large scale armed conflicts persist because they are being willingly manufactured. War is being made constant by the people who earn extraordinary profits as long as blood is being spilled, as well as by the super-rich whose interests are secured by a world torn apart by war.

But never mind what the war-mongers and conniving oligarchs may want. The world is changing. People everywhere are achieving unprecedented levels of unity. Our common humanity is revealing itself, and showing us that we are only fighting and hurting ourselves.

Over the coming years, we aren’t going to do away with the noble sentiments that drive people towards joining the Armed Forces. Instead, we’ll work at channeling these cherished energies into constructive ends rather than allowing them to become the means for murdering fellow humans on an industrialized scale.

Final Tally: 128,000 Non-Combatants Dead in Iraq

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Over 162,000 humans were killed by violence in Iraq from 2003-2011, according to NGO Iraq Body Count (IBC). IBC’s comprehensive analysis of the bloody conflict reveals close to 80% of these fatalities were innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

What a tragedy. Every single life lost inflicted untold horror upon any loved ones left behind, and when you multiply that by 160,000,  the result is a pain too immense to fathom.

Did any good come out of this occupation/slaughter? Depends who you ask.

CEOs from any industry entrenched in the war business could likely boast significant earnings off the prolonged military campaign. No doubt countless military personnel feel an impregnable sense of pride for so bravely serving their country.

As for spreading democracy or making America more secure, well, these were just a few of the myths they sold to the public in order to justify the invasion.

With so much on the line, Americans (and the world) would be served well to reflect a little harder before making the same mistake again. Unless there is an immediate and clear threat, best leave the armies at home and try diplomacy instead.

No Way NDAA!

Dec 31, 2011: While most Americans were preparing champagne and party favors for their big New Years shindig, President Obama coyly signed the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into US Law.

This civil rights shredding bill gives the US military the option to detain US citizens suspected of participating or aiding in terrorist activities without a trial, indefinitely.

As you are probably aware, it doesn’t take much to be labelled a terrorist these days. Members of the Occupy Wall Street are now considered terrorists. Trying to expose atrocious animal farming conditions may soon be considered an act of terror. Even creating provocative art might get you locked up in a cell without a trial.

Like I’ve said before, this dangerous legislation takes the US population one step closer to being imprisoned by a fascist state. Seeing as most Americans will be unwilling or unable to move out of the country, the only options left are to become enslaved or to grow empowered.

Which path will you take? Will you just passively observe as your government turns the system of laws into a jail around you? Or will you start taking action right now?

The clock is ticking. Don’t wait any longer.

Global Truce 2012

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Involved in the military? Para-military? Maybe your a mercenary. Well, whatever role you play in warfare, be sure to leave your calender open this fall as September 21, 2012 will be the first ever Day of Global Truce!

That’s right, for a full 24 hours, there is to be no senseless violence, no pointless bloodshed, and no fruitless squandering of treasure and lives. Instead, the whole world will lay down their arms, taking time to reflect on alternatives to perpetual war.

It may seem like a lofty goal, but it’s not without precedence. In 2008, the September 21 Peace Day caused a  70% reduction in violent incidents in Afghanistan.  In 2007, the 1-day ceasefire allowed humanitarian organizations to provide 1.4 million children with life-saving polio vaccinations.

When it comes to building a peaceful planet – something we’ve never had before – we cannot understate the importance of having dreams. Without brave souls envisioning a greater future along with the path to get there, we’d never even know what potentials await us.

So don’t be afraid to have hope. Dare to dream, and when you do, dream big!

Looking Ahead It’s Not Hard to be Optimistic

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Channel 4’s provocative Brave New World series, where Stephen Hawking and other prominent thinkers describe the phenomenal technologies we are in the process of unleashing, really paints a well-founded picture of the future.

And WOW! Talk about a solid dose of optimism!

Films like these just unleash the imagination, setting one free to dream about the fanciful future that is well on its way.

The world today is already awesome – the best that humans have been able to create so far. But, as long as we remain free and alive, the world we’re set to create will be even more mind-blowing.

All the more reason for us to try harder to get along now, so that we are more likely to be around to experience the splendid potentials that await us all.
